For 19-year-old Christa Salam, being a youth advocate leader is a dream role. In her hometown of Jacintoville, southern Belize, Christa leads a youth group of 10 boys and girls, sharing her passion for her community and the environment with the next generation.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, the United Nations Country Team in the UAE quickly rose to the challenge, working together with the International Humanitarian City (IHC) in Dubai to provide immediate support and emergency relief to communities affected by the crisis all over the world.

‘STEM education’, which teaches students the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math has become more important than ever in recent years. As well as developing core technological skills, STEM helps students improve their problem-solving, critical thinking, adaptability, communication and teamwork. These types of classes are especially important for girls, as it gives them the confidence, skills and tools to thrive in a field which is still dominated by men. UNICEF has teamed up with UNDP in Armenia to help bridge this divide and support more young women and girls establish their own startups.

The severe drought has impacted the lives of more than three million people in Somali Region of Ethiopia. Women have lost their livelihoods and have been forced to move to places where they can receive humanitarian assistance from local people, government and humanitarian organizations. 

As female leaders Isabel, Leticia and Rosibel are role models for other young women willing to challenge the cultural norms which used to restrict them to caregiving and domestic roles.
