A UN-led operation to remove over one million barrels of crude oil from a rusting supertanker off Yemen safely concluded on Friday, preventing the immediate threat of a massive spill in the Red Sea.

The traditional knowledge of indigenous communities, and their wisdom in  conserving and restoring  the natural environment play a pivotal role in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. Yet, throughout history, their distinct way of life has been threatened, and their rights to land, natural resources, and political representation, violated. 

Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, during a visit to the Amazon last week, reiterated the United Nations's support to Brazil’s indigenous peoples, and helping amplify their voices far and wide towards the full realizations of their rights.

Our UN teams are on the ground in 162 countries and territories, coordinating joint programmes and tackling a range of priorities and initiatives — from climate action and food security to gender equality and safety of civilians.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed on Tuesday called for urgent efforts to boost climate action, protect biodiversity, promote sustainable food systems, and ensure decent jobs and social protection.
