Trapped at homes, prevented from going to schools, isolated from their families, friends and communities - this is the life of most child brides.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed was in Tunisia from 26 to 28 August to attend the eighth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 8), a forum co-organized by the Government of Tunisia, the Government of Japan, the United Nations and other partners, which hosted some 30 African heads of state and government as well as regional and international organizations, civil society representatives, and the private sector.

Droughts have become an urgent global issue. Aggravated by human-induced climate change and desertification, they threaten all types of countries, negatively impacting food security and socioeconomic development. And prospects are not reassuring as droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world’s population by 2050.

Tongogara Refugee Camp (TRC), located in Chipinge District of Zimbabwe has become a safe haven where nationalities from different countries in Africa have learned to live together and exchange their diverse life experiences. It is a space where tolerating the next person’s way of living is the norm, while also adapting to a different setting away from home.  

The severe drought has impacted the lives of more than three million people in Somali Region of Ethiopia. Women have lost their livelihoods and have been forced to move to places where they can receive humanitarian assistance from local people, government and humanitarian organizations. 

Amid reported deadly missile attacks from Russia’s so-called “special military operation” in Ukraine, including the capital Kiev and other cities, terrified families have been forced to seek shelter underground, the UN said on Friday, adding that at least 100,000 people have likely been displaced by the violence. 

FGM is prevalent in 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. It has no health benefits, and, as the World Health Organization reports, it can pose serious threats to women and future newborns.

More than six years into Yemen’s war, migrants continue to arrive in the country. Most hope to continue north through Yemen seeking job opportunities for day labourers. But many of them are kidnapped and held for ransom. Migrants face hunger, theft, injury, or death along the way as they desperately seek refuge.
