The district of Tarim – in Hadhramout governorate, eastern Yemen - looks like a green oasis with palm trees, yet it is exposed to seasonal floods and extreme heat waves that impact farmlands and damage crops.  Through a joint project funded by the European Union, UNDP worked with local authorities to respond to economic and agricultural needs across the country by engaging community members, the private sector, and civil society in decision making and planning.

Coupled with other extreme weather events, the ongoing drought caused widespread hunger and pushed thousands into near famine-like conditions. In the south of the country, where the land is arid and households more dependent on rain-fed agriculture, the issue of malnutrition is particularly acute. Crops are not only suffering from a lack of water, but have also been damaged by high winds and tiomena – sandstorms - which blow away the fertile topsoil. In these conditions, communities are struggling to grow key staples, including corn.

Millions of people across Türkiye and Syria are struggling to get a roof over their head or indeed still put indeed food on the table. To this end, the United Nations has launched a $1 billion humanitarian appeal to provide lifesaving assistance to 5.2 million people in Türkiye in areas such as food security, education, water, public health, and shelter: a solid foundation of humanitarian support that will advance human development.
